When investing in damp proofing treatment, you want to know it's going to last. Most reputable companies offer guarantees — but not all guarantees are created equal.
Chemical DPC Guarantees
Chemical damp-proof course injection systems typically come with a 20–30 year guarantee from reputable installers. This covers the damp-proof course itself, provided the replastering has been carried out with the correct materials and the ground level hasn't been raised after installation.
What the Guarantee Covers
Most guarantees cover the installed system against failure — i.e., rising damp returning due to the failure of the DPC. They do not typically cover:
- Damage caused by third parties (landscaping, alterations)
- Failure to use the correct replastering materials
- Changes in use of the property
- Subsequent water ingress from a different source
Timber Treatment Guarantees
Woodworm and rot treatment guarantees are typically 10–20 years for the timber treatment itself. Structural timber replacement usually carries the standard guarantee on the materials and workmanship.
What to Check
- Is the guarantee backed by insurance? (CIGA – Certificated Installer Guarantee Association)
- Is it transferable to a new owner if you sell?
- Does it cover both materials and labour?
