Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our plastering, damp proofing, and timber treatment services.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes — all estimates are free and carry no obligation. We visit the property, assess the work required, and provide a written quote. We don't give prices over the phone for damp work, as accurate diagnosis requires a site visit.

How quickly can you start work?

Availability varies depending on the time of year and the size of the job. We aim to provide an initial survey within a few days of your call, with work typically starting within 1–3 weeks. Emergency damp proofing situations are given priority.

Are you fully insured?

Yes. Shadbolt Plastering carries full public liability insurance. Proof of insurance is available on request.

Do you provide guarantees on your work?

Yes. Chemical damp-proof course installations come with a written 20-year guarantee. Woodworm and timber treatment work carries a 10-year guarantee. All plastering work is guaranteed against defects in workmanship.

What types of damp do you treat?

We treat all forms of damp: rising damp, penetrating damp, condensation, and structural waterproofing (basement tanking). We also carry out damp surveys and investigations to accurately identify the type before recommending treatment.

Do you replaster after damp treatment?

Yes — replastering is almost always required after damp treatment, as the existing plaster will be salt-contaminated and must be removed. We use specialist salt-resistant renovating plasters specifically designed for post-treatment replastering.

How long does plastering take to dry before I can decorate?

A skim coat typically takes 3–7 days to feel dry but needs 4–6 weeks to fully cure before you should apply any paint. We always recommend a mist coat (diluted emulsion) as the first coat on new plaster.

How much does a damp survey cost?

We offer free initial assessments for most residential jobs. For a full written damp survey report (for mortgage, insurance, or property purchase purposes), a fee may apply — please call to discuss your specific requirements.

Do you work on listed buildings or properties in conservation areas?

Yes, with experience. Older and heritage properties often require lime plaster and breathable systems rather than modern gypsum plaster or standard damp proofing products. We understand these requirements and specify accordingly.

Can you match existing plaster or render textures?

We always aim to match existing finishes as closely as possible. For heritage properties with unusual textures or mixes, we take time to test and match before applying across a larger area.

What areas do you cover?

We cover South London and Surrey, including Sutton, Morden, Carshalton, Wallington, Wimbledon, Streatham, Croydon, Tooting, Balham, and many more. See our Areas page for a full list, or just call us to check.

Do you carry out woodworm treatment as well as plastering?

Yes. We provide woodworm identification, treatment, and structural timber repair. Active infestations are treated with specialist insecticidal fluid and a certificate of treatment is issued.
