How to Prevent Mould Growth in Your Home

Mould growth in the home is a health hazard as well as an aesthetic problem. Here's how to prevent it from taking hold.

Mould requires three things to grow: moisture, a surface, and warmth. Remove any one of these and mould cannot survive. Here's a practical guide to keeping mould at bay.

Ventilate Consistently

The single most effective way to prevent mould is to keep moisture levels in your home low. Open windows for at least 15 minutes each morning. Use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms — and make sure they actually vent to the outside.

Deal With Damp Quickly

Any leak, damp patch, or flooding incident needs to be dealt with promptly. Mould can establish itself within 24–48 hours on damp surfaces.

Keep Room Temperatures Consistent

Cold spots in rooms — especially corners and north-facing walls — attract condensation and mould. Keeping rooms at a consistent temperature reduces this risk.

Don't Block Airflow

Wardrobes pushed flush against external walls restrict airflow and create cold, damp micro-environments. Leave a small gap to allow air to circulate.

Use Mould-Resistant Products

Mould-resistant paint is available for bathrooms and kitchens. Anti-condensation coatings can also help on cold walls.

When to Call a Professional
