How Long Does Plaster Take to Dry? And Why It Matters

Decorating too soon after plastering is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make. Here's everything you need to know about plaster drying times.

New plaster needs to dry completely before you can decorate. Paint it too soon and you'll end up with bubbling, flaking, and mould. Here's a guide to drying times and how to tell when your plaster is ready.

Typical Drying Times

  • Setting time: Plaster sets hard within 1–2 hours of application (it will feel firm)
  • Surface dry: 2–3 days in warm, well-ventilated conditions
  • Fully dry: 4–6 weeks for a full plaster system; 2–4 weeks for a skim coat

These times are heavily affected by room temperature, ventilation, and the thickness of the plaster.

How to Tell If Plaster Is Dry

Fresh, wet plaster is a dark pink/brown colour. As it dries, it lightens to a pale cream or white. The plaster should be the same colour throughout before you decorate.

What Happens If You Decorate Too Early

  • Paint can seal the surface, trapping moisture inside and causing mould
  • Emulsion paint applied too early can pull moisture out unevenly, leaving blotchy patches
  • Wallpaper adhesive can cause the wet plaster surface to break up

What to Do While Waiting

Keep the room well-ventilated but avoid direct blasts of heat (like halogen lamps or fan heaters). Even heating is fine. Keep windows slightly open if possible.

Mist Coat First

When the plaster is fully dry, apply a mist coat (watered-down emulsion, about 5:1 water:paint ratio) before your topcoat. This seals the porous plaster surface and ensures your topcoat goes on evenly.
