When to Call a Professional Plasterer (And When to DIY)

Some plastering jobs are genuinely DIY-able. Others will go wrong and cost you more to fix. Here's how to tell the difference.

Plastering is one of those trades that looks simple but is genuinely difficult to do well. Here's an honest assessment of when to DIY and when to call a professional.

Jobs You Might Manage Yourself

  • Small hairline crack filling with filler
  • Minor surface imperfections before repainting
  • Very small patch repairs on existing plaster

Jobs You Should Always Call a Professional For

Full re-plaster of a room — Applying a consistent, smooth skim coat that dries flat is a skill that takes years to develop. DIY attempts almost always result in ridges, trowel marks, and uneven surfaces.

Damp-affected walls — If the plaster is damp, the replastering needs to use specialist salt-resistant materials applied in the correct way. Normal plaster over damp walls will fail within months.

Old lath and plaster repairs — Victorian and Edwardian properties often have lath and plaster ceilings. Repairing these without understanding the system can cause collapse.

New plasterboard — Taping and jointing or skimming plasterboard requires the right technique to avoid visible joints appearing through the decoration.

Rendering external walls — Applying an even coat of render over an entire wall is a two-person job requiring skill and the right mix.
